How the 401(k) projection works

Your monthly contribution is a percentage of salary. The employer match is applied to your contribution up to the cap. Both amounts are invested monthly and grow at the assumed annual return.

FV = B(1 + i)^m + (C + E) × ((1 + i)^m − 1) ÷ i

B is the starting balance, C is your monthly contribution,E is the employer match, i is the monthly return, andm is the number of months.

The projection assumes your salary stays flat and contributions are made monthly. It does not account for plan fees, vesting schedules, or IRS limits on the employer match.

Frequently asked questions

How does the employer match work?

The calculator matches a percentage of your contributions up to a cap. For example, a 50% match up to 6% of salary means your employer adds 50 cents for every dollar you contribute on the first 6% of pay.

Does this include the 401(k) contribution limit?

The projection does not automatically cap your contribution at the IRS limit. The calculator warns you if your annual employee contribution exceeds the 2026 limit for people under 50. Check the current limit for your age and plan.

Is the annual return guaranteed?

No. The return is an assumption for projection purposes. Real investments fluctuate, and fees reduce returns. This is not a promise of future results.
